DOI Announces Final Rule for Offshore Oil Workers Safety

Reinstating blowout prevention systems for underwater wells.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced a final rule for offshore oil and gas worker safety standards. This rule reinstates measures walked back under the previous administration, such as the requirement of blowout preventer systems to seal underwater oil wells, the full report of failure data within 72 hours of system failure, and investigations into system failure within 90 days of an incident.

“These improvements are necessary to ensure offshore operations, especially those related to well integrity and blowout prevention, are based on the best available, sound science,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “As our nation transitions to a clean energy economy, we will continue strengthening and modernizing offshore energy standards and oversight.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Haaland as she reinstates rules for offshore oil and gas workers.
  • For Interior officials as they collaborate with the Energy Department on offshore drilling regulation.
  • For the health and safety of those working on offshore oil and gas rigs.
